Never know what you'll find

Replaced the heater box today on the B. I looked in the hole after removing it and there was a key for the ignition sitting in the air duct in the firewall. I don't think this is a very good place to hide a key, but I know no one would find it there.

Was it the original key the dealer attached to the firewall?

No, just a single key that read AUSTIN on it. It was under the heater box where the black air hoses go thru the firewall.

If it fits the ignition, it might be the all metal one that was screwed to the firewall just to the side of the heater.....good find.

That's "different"!!!

Maybe the original dealer did that as "SOP" so they could retrieve a key when the car shows up on a truck after the owner "Lost" the keys???

The spare key to my 74-1/2 GT was just aft of the coil on the inner fenderwell. I've seen others there as well.

They all had that key screwed to the fender... A short trip from the firewall to the fresh-air vent on the windscreen cowl....

Close enough, does it work. Should polish up nicely.

I had the same thing happen with my 67 Chevy PU when I replaced the heater core. Maybe it was a common place to hide extras back in the day.

Found one in the same place on a '79 junkyard B and thought it was an odd place for a PO to put a spare. Unfortunately, somebody had already taken the ignition switch off the column.

Looks like one of the original keys that was screwed to the firewall.

...Also found a BMC 'Passport to Service' for Healey BJ8 (in the GT), I sent that to Steve at the Healey register, a sampler of 'old spice', a screwdriver, a collar for a cat or small dog.
One thing I haven't found, that I desperately need to find, are the bolt holes for the seat rails!
