Knock in Transmission/Gearbox

I pulled the tri-carb out of winter storage today to warm up my spirits, and I was greeted with a new sound in the gearbox. I'm fairly certain it is in the main body, because I removed the tunnel and could feel a bit of impact on the right side. The noise goes away with the clutch engaged or when in gear. I have a spare box ready to go in, just wanting to know what the wise men here think the knock is coming from. I always expected that the bearings were toast when I drove it last year.

Just thought to check the oil and it is low (as in not on the stick). I am going out to get some 30 wt. and see if it goes away.

Put in a quart of oil and that took it to the 1/4 level between fill and full. It was still there, but much less. I plan to pull the gearbox tomorrow and see what I see. Any suggestions to what the cause is?

My bet would be on the needle rollers where the mainshaft and the input shaft come together, particularly since you were low on oil and seem to have been that way before the car was put away for the winter. I had the same sort of thing with an Alpine years ago and that was the cause and result.

Got the spare in last night, and I must say, that I don't care to do that again. I haven't checked to make sure the knock was entirely gone because I did recognize that the dowel bolts that align the transmission were not present. Would anyone happen to have a pair so i can wrap this job up?
