Does anyone have a used octagon knock off wrench they can spare to sell to me? I seem to have misplaced mine and am stunned at the price asked by VB and Moss........ FYI, they are asking $49.95. I need to pull my axles to get the diff out and off to a rebuild shop.

Would a brass or dead hammer from Sears not work just fine till you can get one on eBay?

This is the octagon bit that fits onto the Fed Safety caps.....you put it on, hold it, and wail away with your BFH.

I know other marques were forced to use those type caps.....anybody in your area with a similar vintage other marque?

If you had some ¼ plate steel and a plasma cutter you could easily make one. Hey, If you don’t have one it would be a good excuse to tell the wife that you needed another tool.

For $20 shipped? Get the Ebay wrench - no-brainer there!

Some knockoff's have the ears, I think that's what Jack was referring to with his suggestion of a dead blow hammer. Wouldn't work very well on the ones that are the plain octagons.

Or just change over to eared knockoffs!

You know, I just might do that....... But I still would need to get the old ones off first. I'll go compare prices of the eared caps vs an octagon tool.

If you finished with the octagon bolts use a pipe wrench.

For eared knock off's I've got a home made hammer that came with a car. It is made up of about 5 lbs of wheel weight lead poured in a tin can around a piece of 3/4 pipe with pipe caps on each end. The can was then removed.

It does'nt damage knock offs and removes any wheels with just a couple of light taps. Can't beat the inertia in all that swinging lead. First knock off hammer I grab around the shop.

Kurt.

No, use a couple pieces of leather on the jaws and take them off with care and send them to me

I just looked and the two ears are $109 a set and the octagon tool is $49.95. This is gonna take some thought.......

I am going to see if I can try the padded jaw technique with my 24" Ford wrench, if that works we shall see about replacement.

That ebay post for the wrench was (and still is) $12.99 as "buy it now"
Why not get that one?

Well, the Ford wrench got the L/H side off, but the R/H was resistant. Luckily, just as I was reaching for the pipe wrench, I found the missing tool and used it to remove the other one.

However, all this thinking about knockoffs has convinced me to buy some bling for my car, so I am going to get a set of the 3 ear Boranni type. Thus I will have a set of octagons available with the correct 1967 wrench too!! Contact me offline and we can make arrangements for shipping once I get the new ones mounted.

You have better luck than me. I would have found the tool AFTER using the pipe wrench.
