Knock off's......or..... Fall off's

Hi there, I have had probs with the knock offs coming adrift on my B (3 sepperate occasions) this has been solved now. However I have little trust in them now and wish to fit mag wheels (standard bolt on style) Can anyone tell me if I can remove the splined hub and fit a standard style mag to the remaining studs? If so, who makes Mags in this stud pattern?
Thanks

could the splines be on backward? They are uni-directional, the passenger side of the car has reverse threads while the drivers side has standard threads. Look at the knock offs, they have an arrow pointing to "undo", the driver's side should "undo" counter-clockwise.

Never had a knock off come off & I've been driving MG's for 40+ years....2 things: are your hubs on correctly - left on left, right on right & are you sure they're tight?

I can certainly understand your desire to get away from knockoffs if they keep loosening - when I first bought my car I lost a wheel towing it home!

As was mentioned, if you do decide to keep the knockoffs you need to make sure they're mounted correctly. If you do decide to go to a regular or non-knockoff alloy wheel, you're going to have to replace the studs as the ones you currently have are not long enough to mount anything other than the adapter safely.

All of the big parts houses offer Panasports or some other Minilight copy, and the European ones also offer Revolution and/or Cosmic wheels.

Happy hunting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

It's not an easy switch on the MGB, or any other MG really. Triumphs use bolt on adapters that make it fairly easy to switch back and forth from one to the other. On the MGB you have to change the front hubs and rear axles.

Are your splines severely worn? are you properly tightening them? Just some other things to consider.

Knock offs should never come off on their own. If they do, one or more of a few things are happening (some mentioned above already)

1) Worn out hub splines

2) Left and Right hubs on reversed

3) Wheel splines worn out

4) Wheels severely out of true

5) Knockoff / hub threads worn or damaged

6) Knockoffs overtightened too many time / wheel hub mushroomed out

7) Knockoffs not installed tightly enough

8) Knockoff tightness not double checked after a few hundred miles.

When checking tightness after some driving, it should not take more than one or two taps to completely lock it down. After this check, they should never tighten any more if you happen to check them again after more mileage.

I know this didn't answer your real question, but I just wanted to chime in for those who may not know this info.

If splined knockoff hubs are in good condition & installed right way around, they are self tightening as the car rolls forward. Of course this makes them self loosening if the car is towed backward.
