Gearbox Oil

Hi All,

What is the current recommendation on gearbox oil? Use 20/50, same as engine or 60w? I did read non detergent is best.

Looking forward to the current thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Bob

I asked the same question not to long ago and the most common advice I got was to go with 60wt VR1 racing oil in both engine and gearbox.

Thanks Guys!

60wt VR1 it is!

Is there a special tool to remove the large nut on the overdrive?

Thanks!

There is a special tool that hooks into the notches on the big brass plug. British Car Specialist sells it for about $50.00. The smaller one with the square hole can be opened with the ratchet (a little sloppy fit) or a BCS sells a length of square metal that will fit the axle filer hole. As I found out recently, both must be removed to empty the gear box with overdrive.

It depends. My original nut had the notches around the edge and I made a tool to take it off. When I had my transmission and overdrive rebuilt, they replaced it with one that had a 1 3/16 hex on it.

A few threads ago, someone posted a link to an interesting write up about O/D oil. The write up concluded that 30 weight non detergent was the best bet. I'm not using that in my car at the moment however.

I thought that I had read in several places on the forum to use Red Line MT90. That's what I use in the SE-R LeMons car. It's funny nowadays trying to find "GL4" in an auto-parts store.

Anyway, I was planning to use MT90. Has that advice changed?

Grover--

Redline MTL and MT 90 are both GL-4 oils which are appropriate for gearboxes containing yellow metal.

I use MTL in both Healeys but they have Toyota boxes (non-OD) and don't know how that would work out. I'm sure someone will have input.

Just changed gearbox oil in my 100/4 and used Valvolene 60W VR1 racing oil. Shifts nice and the oil weeps have stopped.

Questions:
1)Is that synthetic or conventional?
2)Is the 60W VR1 appropriate for Philadelphia weather or just those nicer climates where you all live?

I would of thought that 60w oil would be to thick. Since new it only called for
30w

Cheers
