Oil dripping from gearbox

Can someone please enlighten me on what maybe the cause of oil drip from gearbox at joint with the drive shaft? It wasn't leaking before I changed the oil. My guess is that the seal is damaged or is it something more serious???

When I was changing gearbox oil yesterday for the 1st time since I got the car, I opened the plug on the side of the gearbox and stuck my finger in and tried to feel if there is any oil, and I couldn't get my finger wet. There must have been only about a quart of dirty oil drained from the bottom drain hole.

After filling the gearbox with new oil, I parked the car in my driveway which has a slight slope, with the front higher than the rear, and after about a few minutes, there was a small puddle of oil on the driveway.

My question is, is it difficult to change the rear gearbox seal? Do I need to remove the gearbox from under the car to do that? Any advice would be most appreciated...

Here is the picture of the leaking oil.

Looks to have been leaking a while before you ended up with it. You can change the seal with the box in place: Driveshaft down, remove the output flange and pry out the seal. Much easier to type than do, tho.

This is now into the area where you're going to need a plan... if you decide to replace the cam and lifters, the job is MUCH easier with the engine out of the car... that said, the gearbox ~should~ be removed with it. You can then split the two and renew front and rear seals of the box. At that point the clutch can be checked, throwout bearing replaced, things inside the box measured.

You see where this is going?

Doc, Yes, I am getting sucked into a black hole... :jester: BUT I still want the CB. So, I will just replace the seal, and since the flange is probably scarred, so I will also order a sleeve. I will change out the camshaft, lifters and push rods to fix the problem with valves not lifting and get the car in good mechanical condition...then sell it to buy a CB.

Built a flange nut removal tool (using an angle) and got the flange off the tranny. Marked the nut, the shaft and the flange so I can reassemble exactly the way it was before. It took 8 complete turns to remove the nut. The sleeve I got from the supplier is too lage! :eeek: so, now waiting for a new sleeve to arrive. The flange is scarred so a new seal will not work without the sleeve.

Oh bother!

Well, as you are apparently able to engineer this stuff, YAY!!

The earlier cars are actually simpler than the thing you're fixin' now. Steady on!
