It took longer than I expected but it looks better than it did. The cardboard (fiberboard?) was replaced with 6 mm luan from Home Depot (~$10 for a 4x8' sheet and the nice man will cut it into quarters for free).
Next time (eh?) I'll try the hardboard (?) stuff because you actually have to bend the panel to fit it. (Fortunately, those panel clips are strong so I was able to bend the luan after a bit of a struggle) Also, I had to do without the outer ring on the door crank - I may re-visit that next time the panel comes off.
