"distance piece" in under tea hub nuts?

I'm due to meet the guy who's assembled my fresh 3.54 diff on Saturday to re-assemble the rear axle complete. When I removed the hub nut as I took it out of the car I noticed that there was no 'distance piece'/spacer washer between the locking washer and the bearings.

What do these do, what are they made of? I have time to order one if I ring today...

The rear wheel bearing outer ring is supposed to be clamped between the inner end of the bearing seat and the half shaft plate you bolt on, so it's impossible for the outer bearing ring to move around. Without this distance ring there's a gap between the bearing and the half shaft and the bearing cannot be held in place properly.

I wonder if this had more to do with the hub leaking oil than poor seals? Either way I jumped the gun and ordered a set ready for the weekend. Thanks .
