Big Kid that I am....

Took a little road trip this weekend to the city and decided to take a backroad into town. Went down a well traveled two-lane blacktop and came up to a busy 4-way stop. The next vehicle to go ahead of me was a tourist bus built to look like a steetcar. All the windows were down and a bunch of Union Jacks and British-looking bunting was hanging everywhere. The big bus lumbered along ahead of me at a snail's pace. That was his butt. Checked the oncoming traffic and any potential side-road access...and gunned it!
I caught second midway beside the bus, laid some serious rubber and impressed the heck out of...me, anyway. The big six was wailing and the mufflers were barking. Big kid.

Sometimes ya gotta do such things.

And I have a copy of Two Lane Blacktop, James Taylor's only movie. The real star of the show was the '55 shoebox with the rat motor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OK, I'm not advocating street racing here at all, but...the conditions were just perfect. It was a long day at work and although I know it's stupid I couldn't resist. If we were in traffic I wouldn't have even though twice about it. Unfortunately, this happened in my daily driver Subaru and not the TR6, so it wasn't quite as cool. Then again, there aren't many drag races a fairly stock TR6 can win these days, even against minivans.

Yesterday I'm driving home from work in the afternoon. Route 1 here in central NJ, three lanes each way, concrete divider, stop lights every 1/4-1/2 mile or so. I'm in the center lane and end up the first car in line at a light. I hear a revving and look to my left and see a young kid, baseball hat on sideways, grinning at me from his couple year old Stang GT. Looked like a 99 maybe, bone stock looking down to the wheels, very clean, sounded a little better than stock. Maybe he had pipes on it, I don't know. Anyway, I play dumb and don't rev back. By some freak of nature there isn't a car in front of us for at least a 1/4 mile, which is highly unusual for this piece of road. Light turns green and we both hammer it. He gets me on the dig, low end V8 torque is a great thing, plus I bogged it a bit out of the hole. He puts 1, maybe 1.5 car lengths on me tops, so I'm playing catch up as I row through 1st and 2nd but the turbo is coming on full boil and the car is pulling HARD! By the bottom of 3rd I'm reeling him in fast and as I shifted to 4th I was walking on past him like nothing happened. By the time I shut it down for my quickly approaching exit I had probably close to 2 lengths on him. As he passed me he gave me a thumbs up and a beep. Not bad for a stealthy 4 door grocery getter, and I wasn't even running it all the way to redline. I haven't done that in a loooong time, being the responsible adult I now am. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Boys will be boys, and men will be...well...boys.

Nice one Scott....I remember driving my Camaro to work, at least once a week I'd have someone like that pull up, I never raced anyone in that car though. Now with the Jag I am a little more open to whatever comes up.....I think I made a Jaguar fan outta some kids in a BMW the other day.

First Capt. Roy,
That would be an old man scaring another old man!
Cocodrie, eh. Great fishing down there. Make sure you get the seafood platter at the Coco Marina, a nice treat. You will be coming in on I10 from Texas, turn right onto Hwy 90 at Lafayette and go onto Houma, I think. Should be some pretty good redfishing and specs. Speckled trout is my favorite. The white shrimp season this year has been spectacular, I bought some 21/25 sized shrimp from a local sport-shrimper for $2 a pound this morning. That much shrimp in the gulf will bring in a lot of fish.
Good luck.

Apologies in advance for the re-direct. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Does Lafayette still have the 'Cajun' Visitors center? They used to have a really good short film about the Cajun's first coming to North America and how they got bounced down the East coast and into the gulf and were basically deposited in the swamps. Where they proceded to dig in like ticks on a coon dog. No wonder they are wary of outsiders. Sheesh!

I spent a week in Lafayette one August back in the mid 1990's. Longest month of my life. Especially when the overnight temp would plummett to a nice cool 96 degrees from the days high of 98 degrees. Supersaturated air is not fun to someone who has grown up in high altitude deserts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Humidity has no business being at 98 percent during the day and then going up at night. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif The only difference between night and day heat was light vs. dark. That's just not right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif
