1963 Midget Front Suspension

Okay, I've gotten the complete driver side front suspension out from under the car to include the wishbone/spring pan...There's no pressure on the shock arm so its either empty or shot; however, that's not my question or problem:

Item # 19 (pin) in the diagram below is...I've got to get it out before I can remove the fulcrum pin (#12)...I removed the little nut off the end of the pin & immediately ruined the threads of the pin trying to get it out....so, here's the problem: HOW DO I GET THAT LITTLE PIN OUT??

I'm moving to the passenger side right now & don't want to damage the pin this time....

I think the easy answer is that you won't get it out without wrecking it!
Try tapping it out while the nut is still on, but loosened, heat it up, but most likely you will have to hit it hard with a punch and a big hammer, thus wrecking it.

If you think that's hard, just wait till you try getting the fulcrum pin (12) out!!!

The last ones I did I just cut the fulcrum pin. It will need to be replaced anyway(most likely).

What ever it takes.

Tony, I would just pull the a-arm fulcrum, king pin and all then send it to Eric at Riverside motors (I can give you his contact if you are interested) and he will send you a rebuilt one with a new fulcrum pin and king pin already attached and ready to install. The price is quite fair as I recall... Not much more than doing it yourself. But of course with this method your knuckle skin stays attached to your knuckles.

That's my plan. I've got my 2 A-arms sitting on a garage shelf, ready to go off to Eric.

But but, Tony is the man. Get your big hammer and a drift pin and maybe a bit of heat. LOL

That's my plan once I get that little pin out!

Since I don't have a honing tool, I'll be shipping them off to someone, haven't decided who yet....need to talk w/Tom Bedenbaugh in Memphis....don't have Eric's contact info....need to call Dick Leuning up in Wisconsin.....compare all their prices since they all do great work....somebody will do them while its in body shop & I'm building the engine.

Also need to think about what to do with the shocks...

Radiator's already in the shop, gas tank & heater core go tomorrow morning....

Hap's got the carbs, Ben Pender gets the transmission next week...body man is coming by over the weekend with a dolly to lift the body onto & transport back to his shop

I've got an overall plan!!

Shocks are an easy solution. Send them to Peter Caldwell at Worldwide Auto Parts in Madison WI. He'll redo them.

You find much better!

I can do the king pins too.

By the way.... Eric has requested no new work for a little while. Call him first. Soon I hope he's back to his old self, but at the moment he needs some rest.

So, Monday all 4 shocks & both front suspensions go out via FEDEX to Peter!!

....& I'm loading the gas tank & heater core to take to the shop today....

Now, all's left is dropping the rear end itself & loading the body on the dolly & taking it to the body shop....

Love it when a plan comes together!

(Photos when the body is on the dolly on the trailer.)

1200 miles is still some distance, but that's another story entirely. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

You've motivated me, Tony. I'm calling PeterC later today to set up rebuilds on shocks and front suspension.

Hey, that's nothing - I've had my MGB in Utah before!! Just a straight shot down the interstate!!

Its 610 miles for me.....

I had already made my reservations at the show's hotel w/lake view room some months ago when the show was first announced.....today I committed & paid my show registration/banquet/et.al. fees.....so, I'm locked in - gotta get the car finished now!
