1963 BJ7 Resto up-date

I just finished uploading some new pictures to the album I created for the restoration of my '63 BJ7. Please excuse if some are a bit blurry, as they are screen prints from videos I recorded using a GoPro attached to my nest while working. I also managed to unfortunately delete a couple of videos by mistake, they were showing the installation of the head, cam followers, push rods and rocker shaft, so no pictures for any of that.

I also wanted to ask, I would like to get rid of all the oil drips I can , I fitted one of the Rear Crank Seal Conversion Kits, and was thinking about the felt plugs, is it a good idea to soak them with RTV silicone gasket maker before installing to try to block any oil from going out of the engine. Is it a good idea or not?

Re: 1963 BJ7 Resto up-date

Regarding the felt plugs; yes, I would coat them with silicone RTV. If fact, it has been recommended to just fill the holes with RTV instead of using the felt plugs.

Please let us know how the rear seal works. We fitted one to our BN2--the crankshaft has to be machined--and we still get the leak. It was recommended to drill another drain hole in the rear main cap, but we didn't do that. I pulled the pan and re-installed the felt plugs after coating them with RTV, and it seemed to help a bit.

Ken Rocke, a longtime SoCal amateur restorer, told me he cuts the felt plugs* into 1/4" lengths, coats the pieces with RTV and seats them in the hole with a drift.

I've had almost leak-free performance for 7 years by coating the areas shown in the photo with Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket:
