Having just repacked my phase 1 BJ8 wheel bearings, I have come across a conflict. The Haynes Manual on pages 180 and 182 tell you, "Do not put any grease in the grease retaining cup/cap." However on page 7, it tells you to "repack front hub caps" at 6 month/6000 mile intervals. The Healey Workshop Manual 100/3000 on LLL.2 tells you to "pack the retaining cup with grease".
My wheel bearings were fine, although I hand repacked them liberally with grease. But when it came to the retaining caps, I was conflicted. I ended up puting some grease in the caps but not filling them. I assume the wheel bearings will pull some of the grease from the cup as needed, and the proper maintenance doesn't require you to break the hub down but just refill the caps at the proper intervals, but the wording in the manuals is confusing.
So my question, Do you put grease in the retaining cup/cap or not? How often should one actually break down the hub to inspect the wheel bearings?
