Wheel Bearing Grease/ Impact wrench on hubs

Gotta makea trip to O'Reoilly's in the AM for 2 new cotter pins and wheel bearing grease so Bugsy can finally no longer be a member of the wobbly wheel club. Any recommendations on grease type?

Another question, since I pulled the caliper already and issue with using the impact wrench on the wheel hub, set at less than 600 foot lbs of torque of course. I'll have sprayed with PB Blaster overnight and I had these apart 5-6 years ago so it's not like it's been 40 years. The last thing I want to do is break a bolt off. It's supposed to be 55 or so tomorrow and if the wobbly wheels get fixed Bugsy is going for a ride.

Jim, the wheel hub nut should not be that tight. Try a wrench first, I bet it comes right off. I have never had one of these nuts give me any trouble.
I like Castrol wheel bearing grease. It just goes with all the other lubes on a Brit car. I use all Castrol products.

Cotter keys. Buy the plastic boz with a bunch of all sizes, you will never need to get any in the future. Make em stainless from the boat supply house.

Wheel Hub Nut I'm sure will come right off. I was talking about the 4 bolts holding the rotors on. After thinking about it I realized, No I do not need to take those apart to simply change the wheel bearings.

Frank and Jack, thanks for the info.

No you don't and only two bolts from the back hold the rotors on. Leave those two on the front alone.

Jack,

On a '68 4 bolts hold the hub to the rotor. While the hub was still on the spindle, I used impact wrench on low torque setting to undo the four bolts. You can read my other #$#!$### post regarding replacing a wheel stud which necessitated taking the hub apart. I just don't know my own strength.

Hopeing to pull the front hubs today on the 67 so will count bolts. I do know the 72 only has two bolts and a Miata only has one.

Jack I pulled mine apart yesterday to replace the wheel stud. I found just one in the bottom of my junk nuts and bolts box. There are 4 9/16" bolts on that hub holding on the rotor. I used my impact wrench on a low setting and had to use a regular 9/16" socket, not one of the heavier black impact sockets to get in there. Clearances are real tight in there. Zipped right off after being PB Blasted overnight.

Welcome! PB Blaster is a great penetrating oil, and will get almost any stuck nut or bolt free. Douse liberally, and wait a few hours. It may need more than one treatment, but that's rare. Most part stores carry it.

Hope to hear more about your '71 restoration! :savewave:

In addition to PB Blaster I also use heat, then, while it's hot - touch the threads with a candle - wax will wick into the threads - and then hit it woth Cold water to jolt it - pretty good success with all
