TR2/3/3A Front wheel bearing felt seals too large?

I did not drive far with the set up in the picture but you can see that the felt is sticking out too far. I have heard there is a way to razor cut the felt but am leery of cutting too much off creating metal to metal. I have purchased new rotors and would like to get this issue resolved. Unfortunately my budget dosn't allow for Moss's spindle upgrade kit which many have asvised is the real solution.Anyone shaved down the felt seal or can these over large ones actually be compressed? The way this seal is would it not throw out the wheel bearing adjustment? Karl

I would compress the felt and not cut any away. You'll want a good seal. When I put new bearings in my hubs I used a bearing/race driving tool to tap it in all the way and did not have any trouble. I have heard of some guys getting frustrated by trying to turn the large outer nut to compress the bearing in all the way then having to keep tightening several times after short drives. Anyhow that's my two cents worth...

I did trim a little off the thickness on my seals but I have read on the forum that they will compress. I also had an issue getting the steel cup to fit in the hub. Ended up sanding some off the diameter so it would press in with out distortion.

Follow the service manual and it will not be a problem. The manual says to torque the nut to 10 ft-lbs. (I recommend turning the wheel as you do to ensure all is lined up). Then back off 1-1/2 to 2 flats. 10ftlbs is plenty to compress the seal, and the back off takes the preload off the bearings.

The only problem is owners keep trying to "feel" the setting like on an American car. An American car would not have a felt seal, so it is set differently.
