TR2/3/3A Trunnion spindle cotter pin hole non existent!

The spindles came without the requisite holes for the cotter pin.?Aftermarket??? Is it even possible to drill a hole(size?) thru the threaded part of the spindle so a cotter pin can be used with the castellated nut (I envision broken drill bits)OR can I use a Nyloc nut and still back it off the 1/2 to 2 flats required for the 4 degree end float and possibly use, if necessary, red or blue Loctite in lieu of a cotter pin?

That's the new way. It should have come with nyloc nuts to make it work. I tried drilling them, but they appear to be hardened...I couldn't even scratch them with my cobalt bits.

Interesting. If you do use a Nyloc, be sure the spindle is long enough for the nylon insert to ride on full threads. You may need special 'short' nuts (or cut down regular ones).

I agree with Andy. Could be a disaster in the making.

Not as disastrous as you might think. If the nut does come off, the brake caliper & rotor will keep the hub on the spindle and offer at least some semblance of control. And hopefully you'd notice the sloppy handling and the rotor rubbing the caliper long before the nut actually came all the way off. No worse than losing a wheel bearing, actually.

It happened to a club member while we were caravaning to VTR 2000. I don't recall if she noticed the handling or the brake rubbing first, but the nut was still on the spindle when she stopped. We tightened the nut and installed the cotter pin (that the shop had apparently forgotten), it was still working fine when we got home some 2000 miles later.

Now I'm confused. Are we talking about the wheel bearing spindles or the trunnion spindle? The lower suspension arms cannot come off the trunnion spindle, since the 2 arms are held together with the spring pan. If its a wheel spindle we're talking about, Those still come with, and should have, the cotter key holes.
