Trouble Dropping Motor into Mounts

Hi guys,

I'm in the middle of the process of dropping a 1275 in to replace my 1098 and I've hit a snag. I can't get both of the front rubber mount bolts to drop into the hole in the pedestal. I can do one or the other but not both. It will drop in as low as the hole for the pin but the hole for the bolt is just a little lower. It seems like the 1275's mounts must be a 1/4" wider than the mounts on my 1098 are. I'm using the same rubber mounts and mount pedestals that attach to the car so it can't be related to those. I had the 1098 in and out a few times and never came across this issue before.

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,
Sean

What has worked for me in the past is to attach both of the rubber mounts to the engine (loose) and then attach the metal mount parts, then lower the engine down into the frame a little at a time using Phillips screwdrivers (YMMV) to align the 3 holes on each side as I lower.

Usually the smaller alignment problems will work themselves out.

Could be extra pressure from the Xmission end of the equation is part?? of the problem.

Good Luck-Steve

Take the passenger side pedestal loose from the car and attach it to the mount/engine. Lower into place guiding the drivers side in first.

And... if you happen to take both pedestals off and carefully clean them and reinstall them on the wrong sides... you'll be quite frustrated.... they are handed.

Don't ask.......

I was hoping for a more elaborate write-up, the one where he had worked for 5 days straight to get the motor finished dodging all of the bad delivery timetables by suppliers, broken items, and tools that didn't fit just to put the last six bolts in to secure the motor only to find that the mounts are 'handed' and his installation was going to be further delayed, a great story........

Sean,
Glad to hear the motor is back in. I got lots of practice this spring and summer.
I had the motor and tranny out 3 times converting to and then replacing a 5 speed.
It was worth all the trouble in the end but a frustrating experience all the same.

It this the 1275 I relayed to you in Key West? I'm glad you finnaly got it sorted.

1275 is in the car!! I had the order wrong I guess. Once it was clear that the drivers side pedestal had to be mounted to the car and i accepted that i probably just had to be a bit more forceful with everything it was a done deal. Thanks guys.

Hiya Phil, that 5 speed will probably be great down there in south fla. It turns out the 1275 that you relayed had zero compression so it's still sitting around. The guy that sold me that one swore it was in good shape so I'm betting a stuck valve or ring or something like that from sitting around. The one I just put in was "thrown into" another deal along with a ribcase transmission when I bought a mint condition factory hardtop. All that for $300! Turns out there are so many people looking to get rid of their old car parts if you know where to look for 'em. I'm becoming a hoarder, I admit it! Now, who's got that neglected Westfield XI kit sitting in their hay loft?

OK... how about 2 guys busting butts to get the transmission swap done between races, and putting the trans mount cradle in backwards... it is a trapezoid, by the way..... You can get the engine in within 3/4 of an inch... but not all the way.... close enough to... well... nevermind.

I did that very thing while putting the engine back in the Tunebug. Even carefully looked at it prior, to make sure I did it the correct way around.

Still got it in backwards.

Had the same trouble when we were kids. Then some "old guy" happened along and after a few more tries on our own, "old man, mumble mumble."... we tried it his way. :yesnod:
