TR2/3/3A TR3 seat rebuild Foam VS Springs

108 in the garage today so I decided to do something easy like take the drivers seat apart, instead of body work. I've been in contact with the guy in OH that sells interior kits on ebay, and he uses foam instead of springs. Roger Williams, and Bill Piggott both say the foam is more comfortable than the springs. But they mention that you should buy the foam, and the wood for the restoration of the seats from one of the shops that do upholstery work.They are not talking about the tack strips found on the seats though. Who sells this wood and foam? Not sure if the the guy in OH uses what they recommend.

In my mind it seems like just foam on the seat bottoms would not offer any side support. Is there a wood frame that is used instead for the support? I've had a set of springs backorderd for almost two years now.

Go to Tempe Sales (Broadway just west of Mill in Tempe). I get a lot of my upholstery supplies there. There's a number of different densities of open and closed cell padding. Depending on what you want to can mix and match. For example, I like the softer yellow foam for ceat centers and the firmer black foam for bolsters.

If you make over to this side of town, give me a yell, I'm about a mile away from their shop.

This was posted a while back and showed how to recreat the wood tack strips

When I did mine I also made a form but wet the wood a little and used steam from an old iron. I used some thin luan plywood. Here's a few shots : TR3 seat rebuilding

btw, I PC'd the seat tracks with Eastwood Stamped Steel powder which you can see in one of the photos.

I have the foam (kit) from the ebay guy. It was all pre contoured and came with a wood bottom made from MDF. I made new bottoms from cabinet grade hardwood and chucked the MDF. The foam is great and very comfortable. No side frames as the foam is automotive upholstery grade, very firm and supportive. There are no side bolsters on TR3 seats so that's not an issue, but the backs are supplied with two layers of white foam. Over the foam I used a batting that was also provided and I may have added a little more foam so smooth things out around the top. We are very happy not to bounce around like the original buckboard ride; it was fun around town but not very supportive for longer rides.

Hope this helps. We give this mod an A+ (same as our HVDA 5-speed.)

Could you say who on Ebay you got the foam from?
I put in "Triumph seat foam" on their auto section and got no results.
Am looking to re-foam my TR2 seats.

I'm not for sure but Peter may have got the foams from 2tall auto interiors. That is his ebay store. Just log onto his store and get the phone number from that, and give him a call. He's very easy to work with. I don't think he has a website at this time.

Yes, it was 2tall. He doesn't list the foam kits. Just contact him through ebay and he'll respond back.
