TR2/3/3A rack & pinion steering for a TR3

I believe that member Russ Austin has, and is very pleased with it; probably others as well. There are several threads on the conversion here. At any rate, send Russ a private message, and I'm sure he'll get back to you, if he doesn't see this first.

I got one from the guy in Virginia, but haven't tried it out as of yet, because the resto is not complete yet. However, everything I've read about the conversion is only positive. There is one going off on ebay at the moment for a buy-it-now price of $395. The seller mentioned it's missing ONE bolt, but everything else is there and it has NO miles on it, as he is going to correctly restore the car and is putting back the original steering. It's the kit from Virginia. He mentions the fan and a few other items, but doesn't mention the steering shaft from the rack to the upper end of the split column. I'd ask the seller if that's included. If I didn't already have one, I'd jump on this.

Having 2 TRs -- a '4 with R&P and a '3 with that pre-war steering box -- I can certainly see how it would transform the steering and even the character of the car. Personally I rather like feel of the TR3A steering (if in reasonable condition) provided I don't have to do a lot of low-speed parallel parking.

I just purchased and installed a rack and pinion conversion kit from Moss Motors/UK. It bolted directly to the frame and seems to work great. I won't know until I put the engine back in, but the steering seems to turn without any effort and with no play in the steering. The kit seems to be quality made and cost around $700.00 with shipping from England.

Check out Bob Schaller's little book More BS about TR's. There's a bit about adding R&P to a TR3 using a simple (but super sturdy) bracket welded to the frame and a TR4 rack.
