oil pressure gauge line...urgent!!!

i just removed the oil/ temp gauge and sent to nisonger for repair...temp not registering. of course that leaves the oil pressure line open! does anyone know what type threads are used for the pressure lines to the gauge fittings. i would like to block off the line at the gauge end or at the engine block so that i can at least move the car in the driveway or garage. unfortunately even with expedited servoce at nisonger the gauge will be gone for probably two weeks. thanks for any help!

Spoke to a friend who went through this last year and he went through heroics to block off the flex pipe at the block union fitting. The union is item #65 on the Moss "External Engine, 100-6, 3000" page.

He said you should remove the union from the block and substitute a short bolt into the block in place of the union. Be careful of the threads and use a sealing washer.

Suggestion: remove the union to compare the threads on the side adjacent to the block to any bolt you're considering using.

I'll be looking at the same issue as the ammonia or whatever is in the temperature bulb/line escaped on me. Beyond the oil fitting I also wonder what I am going to do regarding the fitting at the radiator where the bulb goes in. Does anyone know what thread is involved there and/or a means to cap it off while the temperature sender is out for repairs?

Heard from my friend again - he said the union fitting threads seem to be Whitworth and he couldn't find a bolt to match. He read somewhere to solder up the orofice from the inside of the fitting and reinstall in the block. When he got his gauge back from Nisonger, he heated up the fitting and the solder dropped out.

Why not save the aggravation . Go buy a digital thermometer with remote bulb . Tie wrap the bulb to a suitable spot on the radiator or hose or wherever and wait till the off season to get the gauge fixed or just buy a complete replacement gauge and have a spare ?

The union on the block has a male 1/4" BSPPT ( British Standard Parallel Pipe Thread ) for the flexible oil line that can be capped with the right fittings. Sacrificing an old oil line might be the simplest way. Not the same as American standard pipe threads. Smaller end of flexible oil line off block is female 1/8" BSPPT . Pegasus racing has a variety of fittings for BSPPT items.

healey surgeons is sending me a bad copper line to cut and solder and plug the end at the flexible line from the block. i should have it in a couple of days. when i am through with it i will return to healey surgeons for use by someone else. i thought about a new gauge but all my gauges have a similar age appearance and i was reluctant to add a new face to the gauge cluster.

When you get your rebuild back from Nisonger its going to look brand new anyway . new ones on Ebay for 163$ and free shipping .

i hope not. i asked them not to clean the face not paint the pointer. the appearance of the gauge is very good and matches up very well. surely they will follow my instructions. but it will cost more to repair than a new gauge.

Nisonger did all my instruments for my 64 BJ8 restoration and all looked like brand new when they came back to me .

got the oil line from healey surgeons yesterday afternoon. cut it down in length and brazed the tube end shut. screwed in place and works as it should. 'course im not going to ride around not knowing oil pressure and temp in a new to me 56 year old classic!!
