Gear ratios

Frankly, no matter how much I want a 5 speed, be it a 210 or a ford conversion, I can't afford one.
Has anybody changed their (stock) 4th gear to a higher ratio to compensate?
I can't remember if 4th is direct drive or not to know if this question is even applicable.

won't work. 4th is 1:1, can't get any better w/o an OD.

You can modify your final drive ratio though (ring and pinion)

Actually to reduce RPM's relative to MPH, you want to install a lower ratio. I believe for your car you would need to reduce from 4.2 or 3.9 to 3.7. This would decrease your RPM,s by 100-300.

These units can be costly $100+ because they were only used in the '79 and '80 Midgets. They do come up on Ebay and a relatively easy swap.

I would check to what your rear is on the side of the pumpkin. A 3.9 is stamped 39-10. If your has this stamping you would only get a 100 rpm benefit, hardly worth it. If it stamped with the 4.2 stamping which I do not recall (42-12?) then this swap would get you 300 rpms and is probably worth it.

There have been other posts regarding these stampings, so I am sure others will have more info.

[/ QUOTE ] I bought a used 210 5 speed for 350 bucks and an adapter plate for 200 and made about everthing else myself. The kits are $$$$. Also I changed my rear final drive gear to a 3.55:1 ratio. The rear gear change would be the cheapest route for a higher gear. Should save some gas and slow the revs.

I believe the 4.22 is 9/38. The last 3.7 I sold on Ebay brought almost $400 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
