TR2/3/3A Problem with the gear lever "anti rattle fix".....

I installed a 5/8" x 7/8" hard rubber insert on the gear lever to stop the annoying rattle when shifting. Well there is no rattle noise now but it is extremely hard to get the shifter in reverse? Anyone else done this modification and have the same problem? What do you suppose is the causing the balky reverse shift?

Tinkering is often not a great idea. Our cars were marginal as designed. The gear lever needs to move up a bit to get into reverse. If it can't move up properly, no reverse. You should stop tinkering.

This fix was recommended by Triumph to solve a problem common to TR3's.

Found the same thing. I reduced the length of the insert and it is better, but still a little difficult to get into reverse. One of these days I may take the rubber piece out. I used a short piece of fuel line. Cheers, Mike

The length of the rubber hose is stopping you from lifting the shifter to engage reverse try cutting small amounts off until it gets easier. I found with the TR6 box the shifter gate has a sloped entry for the reverse position so you don't have to lift the stick, so you could modify it and solve the problem.

I do have a TR6 box in my 3. I did not know that about the sloped entry. I had put a piece of hard rubber bushing in as the spacer but I don' think it had enough "give" to it so I'm going to use rubber hose this time. I think part of the problem is that the little plunger at the very bottom of the lever was quite worn down. I reversed the plunger, as the other side of the face it still had a flat surface, but don't think that helped. I'm going to order a new plunger and spring.

I found the new spring was too long and wouldn't compress enough to get the plunger in so had to cut some off.
