Engine Removal on '59 BE - Question

I haven't even started to rebuild my 1275 engine, but I will be removing the 1098 that's in the car now.

Question - Should I remove the tranny with the engine, or will I save some work (propshaft removal) by just pulling the engine?

Wahoo--just noticed I'm now a 'Senior Member' - that calls for a cup of coffee.

Definitly pull them both together!! It is easier to remove the four nuts & bolts at the end of the drive shaft than all the bell-housing bolts, and it all come out easier as one unit!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

At one time, kind of hard to clean up and paint the transmission when it is in the car, heh.

Thanks for the input. I'll remove all as one. It will also make it easier to clean and paint (with a roller) the engine compartment.

I've heard my ace mechanic say that painting a tranny isn't a good thing to do. He claims that the paint seals the tranny and doesn't allow it to breath. Definitally pull both at the same time. I don't know your situation, but if the 1098 is running, I'd have the 1275 rebuilt and ready to go before the 1098 comes out.

Sounds like an old wives tail to me. All Bugeye trannys and rear ends were painted, look how long they lasted.

I expect the reason the later trannys and such were not painted was save a shilling here and there and it all adds up after awile.

after a good cleaning, they look great nkd, but i am still tempted to apply some rattle just to make it sparkle (even if it's in a tunnel for the rest of it's life)!

and write yourself a note to put that ground cable BACK on when you put the engine/tran back in!

Where would that tranny be breathing from? I know they can leak oil on occasion, but air? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

You might also want to drain the oil from the tranny or it will "auto-drain" all over the floor out of the back hole when you lift it out.

that's the breather hole! i remember parking on a steep hill long ago and the next day the street was a mess. it's a misnomer to say that's an oil SEAL. more like an oil restrictor.

Maybe it's really just a "vague oil location suggester." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I have always painted mine but left a small patch bare for this very reason, was afraid of suffication.

Tried leaving one of the bellhousing plugs off of a Midg, but clutch would get slippery driving in the rain.

I read afterwards about leaving a small area unpainted so they could breath and I have never had a problem since.
