TR4/4A A time gone by.

49 years ago on Derby Day I was heading north through Louisville in my TR4 with 4 of us guys in it. On our way home from Ft Knox to Madison, WI. Still am that 19 year old kid most of the time.

Yeh, I know this KID that drives a TR4 around here. Trouble is that he has a white beard. So on second look he doesn't seem quite so young. But then his wife keeps telling him how young he acts when driving that car. Our local club took a tour on Saturday. Day started out cloudy but turned beautiful by noon. Ran almost 300 miles. Today I am several decades younger.

I did that from Champaign to Louisville on derby weekend 48 years ago as well in my 1960 TR3. I was too "cool " to take my side curtains so needless to say, my friend Peter and I froze our buts off on the return trip to Champaign that freezing cold Sunday morning. We spent all our money and gas cruising Saturday night and had no gas or money to get home by Sunday morning. We begged a bail bondsman Sunday morning, the only thing open, to "loan" us $5.00 to get home. He finally gave in and we got home. I immediately put $10 in and envelope and mailed it back to Louisville. I remember well, I hope he does as well.

We picked up the Roadster day after Christmas 1973 in Norfolk. After a jump start and cleaning the jets on the carb, I told the wife, "you drive the Mustang and I'll drive this one back to Salisbury, NC. I wore the air horn out and my arms were hurting from waving at people. What a trip of 200 miles on a car I saw for the first time 15 minutes ago. We did have a rope to get to the next town if need be.

Still in love with her, car and wife, or should it be wife and car?

Been doing pretty good Tom and I hope the same is true with you and Shirley. I agree it was a great time to run the Triumphs last year through my home state with you two!

I'm still working but starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel so we've been adjusting things a bit - my passion for Triumphs is still there, my obsession is a little more under control - my stable of 5 TRs is now getting down to two TRs pretty quickly as we sort out future plans. Which is funny because regardless of the number of Triumphs I have only 2 seem to be driveable at any time, so really I haven't changed things much!

My wife and I still hope to get up to VTR Nationals if we can, with or without a Triumph - hopefully we can figure out a way to get together again.
