What are the color of the factory wires connected to it?
Are there any markings or numbers on it?
Did you ever figure out what the transformer was used for?

Looks like a seat belt buzzer.

I go with horn relay, purple and yellow. I'm in the process of installing a new harness, to paraphrase Mick Jagger "I dream in colors".

Going by standard wire colors

Horns-Purple/Purple & Black
Horn Switch-Black/Purple & Black
Trunk Lamp Switch-B/Purple & White
Trunk Lamp-Purple/Purple & White
Ignition Key Warning Buzzer-Purple & Green/Purple & Pink
Ignition Key Warning Door Switch-Purple/Purple & Green
Sequential Seat Belt Control Unit-B,G,NP,(PG),YG,YK,YO,YP,YU.

Your wires appear to be purple & Green/Purple & White or is what I think is white, pink?
Even though my first impression would be a horn or light relay, I have not a clue!

Unplug it and see what doesn't work!

A 73 MGB never had relays for the horns. Looks like a buzzer can to me, almost certainly for the ignition or seat belt warning system.

Looking at it some more, I'd have to say the same thing Scott.

I wonder what the transformer on the left was for?

Noticed that too; looks like a choke. Probably for suppressing ignition noise in the radio.

Twas' common back in the day, before resistor plugs. I'm sure Ol' Doc has seen his fair share :jester:

Seat belt warning buzzer. Stewart, do you have loose/cut wires on the seat belt clip (the static one on the inboard side of the seats)?

Car didnt' have belts or any interior when I got it and the harness is pretty well hacked and is going to be replaced this week.

Never thought it could be a buzzer I always thought they were square boxes. I'll have to put some power to it and see if it still works.

You guys keep saying "buzzer" but what I see in the picture looks like a Lucas flasher unit. I know the color codes don't indicate that... but it's what it looks like to me.

Are there any letters near the spade lugs?

It's the buzzer. I had one out the other day and thought it was a flasher relay. When I hooked it up to a 12V power source it buzzed. Found the one that ticked, which is the one that I needed for the flashers, installed it and it worked.

If it's a buzzer... would it be audible under the bonnet? Does one of the wires go off to a speaker of some sort?

Doug, it appears to be behind the radio in the center console, not under the bonnet. You could hear it there very well. I have one door switch that hangs up and the buzzer won't buzz unless I tap on it. I refuse to fix it, as I hate that buzzer.

I thought that too, Doug. Then saw the "fresh air" flap and re-evaluated the location. feh. Mind's eye trickery. :jester:
