DPO: What to expect?

Probably just the washer....if the threads were stripped I don't think the silicon would have helped. Of course, some people have a habit of using sealer on everything. And if a little is good, then a lot must be better! Right?!

I filled the transmission of my (non-overdrive) MGB a couple of weeks ago, (took two quarts) and I couldn't help noticing that the drain plug in the gearbox is surrounded by blue silicone. Now I know enough to realise that this is not a good sign. I am not getting serious leaking, so it's not a serious problem right now, but I was wondering what I can expect to find. Is it easy to strip the thread in the gearbox casing, or is it more likely that the doofus had lost the washer and was just too lazy to order another one?

Thanks for the replies guys.....I will definitely order a new plug then, and see what I can do in case of a leak. There is no way that I will bodge it up with silicone!

Steve, if the threads in the tranny case are buggered up, there are several epoxy based repair tools that work well. Loctite Thread Mender is the one I've used successfully. Any good parts store should carry something along those lines.
