Just looked at a Spitfire Mk. 4 that's been sitting a few miles from home for a couple years. Other than having a bonnet that looks like it was walked on, it looked solid from the outside.
What amazed me was it had a set of wire wheels that had the hubs drilled so they they could be mounted without splined hubs. The holes were drilled on an angled surface so even if the wheel was strong enough to be bolted into position, it could never be tightened properly. The thought of the holes not being drilled on center makes my tailbone sore.
Where do people come up with these ideas?
