I did the typical first time restorer mistake. I removed the drive shaft and didn't note how it went back. Does the telescopic end go toward the rear or toward the tranney?
Thanks
Greg
Goes toward the tranny. Just got done with mine. There are arrows on both pieces, IMPORTANT that they get reassembled with both arrows in alignment. If you took it apart. I don't know about yours but my splines were covered with old grease that had to be scraped out.
I'm not sure they came from the factory with those arrows. Mine are marked because I marked them.
Just didn't want Greg searching for something that isn't there.
Greg -- If you did not index them (the U-joints) then I guess it goes together either way. Can't be all that critical since when you replace a gearbox there is no index to follow.
If you disassemble the splined joint in the driveshaft, it's important that it be phased properly when you put it back together. Otherwise you can get a strange vibration at speed.
Correct phasing is when the two U-joint yokes attached to the driveshaft lie in the same plane.
This is mentioned in the original factory service manual (along with advice to mark before disassembly, if no marks are present).
For the other splines (in the gearbox & differential), it doesn't matter.
Geo, mine came with the factory markings, I indexed mine then found the factory markings after I cleaned then. Maybe others, perhaps earlier didn't have factory markings. The TR2 with 3 supplement did mention the arrows.
The bolt holes in the joining flanges are offset....two are wide spaced and two are narrow. These flange bolt offsets need to match at each end of the tailshaft.
Re-assembling to the factory markings keeps the tailshaft as it was originally balanced.
