drive shaft/rotor alignment

I'm rebuilding a 68 Copper S LHD. I've rebuilt the front suspension and brakes and am now putting it together. The manual says insert the drive shaft thru the spindle and slip on the brake rotor and collar and tighten the castellated nut. "Make sure you have .006 inches clearance between rotor and the edge of the brake caliper." But it doesn't say how to adjust this clearance. There is no reference in the manuals or parts books about shims that go between the drive shaft and the bearings or any reference to adjustments that can be made. Any ideas?

No idea. That's a new one for me.

If you haven't replaced the front wheel bearings before there's a step I'd like to call to your attention. Fit the rotor/hub assembly as mentioned but do NOT fit the split, tapered washer followed by the castellated nut. Find a suitable, very heavy, flat washer and place it on the spindle first and torque the nut to the prescribed value (150 lb-ft?). Then remove the nut and flat washer, fit the tapered washer and nut and re-torque. If you fail to torque against a heavy flat washer first, it's possible to have the tapered washer bind up before the stub axle is fully seated in the hub. This gives a "false tightness" that quickly gets loose again and can wear out your spindle.

I'll look through my notes tonight and see what I can find about the rotor clearance.

Dominick, which manual/book were you using? I read through mine (Ball, Haynes, factory, and a couple of others) and didn't see what you're referencing above.

The factory manual does mention maintaining runout below 0.006" on the edge of the rotor. They mention measuring for this 0.006" max runout and repositioning the rotor/hub on the axle splines as necessary to minimize the runout. That's the only similar note I found in any of the manuals I looked through.

Perhaps I've got the same or a related manual to what you're working with. Tell me what text you're using and where the information is and I'll see if mine include that step and how I interpret it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
