TR6 Speedo problems [TR6]

I have had a dead speedo for some time now, and yesterday i decided to do something about it (reason for postponing it is that the speedo cable was stuck/VERY tight at the connection to the speedo).. Well, after lots of WD40 and trying not to strangle myself in the steering wheel or brake my neck laying on my back i got the cable off. Removed the speedo and tested it with a spare (clutch)cable i had laying around and a drill - worked fine. The removed the inner cable, and the upper end (speedo end) was clearly deformed. As i had bought a new speedo cable, i just took the inner cable from that and inserted it in the old outer cable, reassembled and thought that i had fixed the problem... No. Still a dead speedo.

Question: is there a special trick to get the inner cable in place, any twisting etc needed? I just inserted it and it seemed to go all the way to the bottom and fit fine? Anything else i have missed here??

Thanks for any help or comments!

Mat,
Try using the old cables remaing good end & inset it in to the speedo under the dash, spin it & see if the needle moves. You should feel some resistance. It is possible the cable end did not seat at one the the ends.
If you use a drill to turn it go SLOW & spin in the counter clockwise direction. Damage might occur if you spin it to fast & in the wrong direction. It's rare that a speedo fails completley so my bets on the cable.

The drive at the transmission end should also have a "square" hole. Make sure when you insert the replacement core that it is engaging the drive at the tranny end by pushing it in/down while twisting. You should be able to get it engaged where the cable's speedo end won't turn with your fingers. If after doing that the gauge still doesn't work, look for problems with the drive in the tranny.

I generally don't like to reuse the sheath unless it's in great shape. If the vinyl jacket is cracked or broken it's very easy for water to get inside and this eventually leads to rust that will bind the core.

Let us know what you find.

Is it possible that the old sheath is longer than the new one? Thus making the new cable come up a bit short in the old sheath, and not able to engage at both ends properly?

Thanks for your input and help! It seems its the angled drive at the O/D, because i noticed that the speedo end of the cable is not turning while driving, i also was not able to push the (inner)cable all the way in so that it would not turn with my fingers... The new cable i bought weas the longest one there was(69" i belive)
