Overdrive transmission question

I am trying to adjust the O/D on my Spitfire MK2. It has a "D" type O/D. I have the inspection plate off and cannot fit the 3/16's rod into the O/D, so I am pretty sure it needs to be adjusted. But here's my question. With the ignition on, and in fourth gear, when I flick the O/D switch the relay clicks but the solenoid piston doesn't move. Should the solenoid piston being moving when I move the switch to the on position?

Yup, solenoid should move. Sounds like you've got a bum solenoid, or a wiring problem.

What happens if you grab the lever with the 3/16" hole, and try to push it forward so the holes line up?

I can move the piston easily back and forth, so I can line the holes up fine. I can't get the adjustment nut to turn on the piston, so I was going to pull the solenoid so I have more room to work on the adjustment nut. The O/D had been working, but then starting working intermitently on the last drive before finally packing it in.

Just a thought, I would double-check that the solenoid is actually getting power. The relay leads a hard life anyway, and just because it clicks doesn't mean it's contacts are good.

After having several of them fail within a few months, I added a diode to help protect the relay contacts (on an A-type, but the relay & solenoid are the same).

Did a check last night. I have power from the relay to the solenoid when the switch is on. Ordered a new solenoid this morning from Nigel over at Spitbits. Thanks for the help.
