Clutch Slave & Wheel Cylinders - Repair or Replace

I'm in the process of completly going through the hyrdraulic system on the 59 TR3. Masters are off and going out for a resleeve and rebuild. Calipers will get new SS pistons and seals. New pipes and new hoses throughout.

Question is: should I send the clutch slave and rear wheel cylinders out for resleeve and rebuild, or simply buy new? I've heard varying reports of the quality of the new parts. Any specific vendor you'd like to direct me to? (PM me if posting that to the list violates the rules.) New is tempting, as it's actually cheaper than resleeving/rebuilding, but I'd rather go with whatever will work best in the long run.

Thanks!

Mark -

Slave and wheel cylinders are easy rebuilds, and very cheap to do yourself. If yours are not pitted or frozen, get the new seals and do them yourself while you are waiting on the masters. Even if you end up getting new ones, you can have these as spares...

Aloha Mark,

Some times the sleeving shops offer a discount if the brake and slave cylinders are included with the masters. As Mickey said, rebuilding with new seals, etc is easily done in your garage. Even if there is some pitting in the cylinders, a drill mounted brake cylinder hone can clean that up quickly. Good luck.

I guess my question is more around the quality of the replacement parts -- again, just talking about the wheel cylinders and clutch slave here. Are the replacement parts as good as the original pieces? Or, should I say, the original pieces with rebuild kits?

I have not had a problem with the hydraulic re build kits from any of the big three parts guys. The last time I rebuilt wheel cylinders was about 8 years ago. I can't comment on complete wheel or clutch slave cylinders as I've bought them. I suspect they come the same source that makes the "rubber" bits and are probably fine. I noticed TRF is selling rear wheel brake cylinders for about $20 each as a Christmas special.
