Carpet Questions

Guys - need some advice.

TRF is having a carpet sale, and I hope to take advantage of it. So, the question is: Rayon Loop-Pile or Tufted Nylon? For a 59 TR3A, do any of you have opinions as to which is nicer or more appropriate for the car?

Also, I'm going to install dynamat-type product on floor pans. Do I need to buy a felt kit under carpet or just install over dynamat.

Finally, use adhesive for carpet, or snaps or ??
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Pat

I would recommend snaps. That way you can remove the carpet if it gets wet so it can be dried.

I think rayon is the more original if not going for the wool.

I also think you can put underfelt over the dynamat.

Did you talk to somebody at trf?

If? More like 'when'...

I got the least expensive carpet from TRF -- that's it hanging there -- still looks pretty good after 30+ years of abuse. Of course, black is the most forgiving colour.

Check that ad copy carefully; I don't believe they have tufted nylon on sale for TR3A. In any case, rayon loop is correct.

+1 on snaps, at least on the floors. You'll probably want to use adhesive on the vertical panels, though.

Hi Randall, we don't often disagree, but I'm pretty sure wilton wool is original for the early 3A's starting at 22014.

This was switched over to "nylon loop" at s/n 35350 (per Piggott's Original Triumph TR3 pg 120)for later cars for obvious cost reasons. So, could be either, depending on Pat's specific s/n.

Yes, glued on for the verticals. I chose to use velcro on the horseshoe u-shaped firewall piece, as it has to come in and out to remove the trans cover unless you cut it.

According to Johnathon Skinner who makes concurs carpet sets in the UK, 4 snaps per side for the front floor carpet, and 3 per side for the trans cover. This is consistent to the snap placings on my original panels so I have no reason to doubt it. I don't know if the TRA concurs standards mention this or not.

+1 on the snaps, and I would recommend using carpet padding over the sound deadening mat. The top of the mat is very slick and your carpet will slide. The snaps keep it all where it need to be. I used the dynamat type product on the floors and inside the doors and used a similar heat resistant mat on the tranny tunnel and firewall. Made a BIG difference in the footwell temp.

For the guys that are using some sort of sound deadner plus a felt kit or underliner for the carpet, are you adding spacers to the bottoms of the floor snaps? I find it difficult on my TR6 with this combination to actually snap the carpet down due to the added thickness.

Cheers
Tush
