A fire at a Sudbury car dealership that destroyed more than a dozen vehicles and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage last month was likely due to a mechanical malfunction in a motor vehicle, officials said Wednesday.
The fire that broke out at the Herb Chambers Land Rover Jaguar at 83 Boston Post Road in the early morning hours of Sept. 22, destroyed 19 vehicles, including Jaguars, Range Rovers, Land Rovers, and Jeeps, causing up to $750,000 in damage, according to a press release by the state Department of Fire Services.
Shortly after the fire, investigators determined that the fire originated in a 2004 Jaguar XJ8, which was undergoing repairs from a previous fire that occurred elsewhere, the statement said. No one was injured in the fire.
“Whether the dealership fire was caused by the original mechanical malfunction that the mechanics working on the car [where the fire originated] had not yet identified, or another electrical or mechanical failure, cannot be determined,” the statement said.
Due to the extensive destruction of the car, experts and investigators are unable to determine the exact cause of the fire in the car, but “there is no evidence to suggest that the fire was intentionally set,” the statement said.
