30 weight oil non-detergent?

I've been looking for 30 weight oil non-detergent to use in my transmision but I'm not finding any locally. What do you suggest? Is there an on-line source?

I just saw some last week in my local Walmart, and I'd think almost any decent auto parts store would carry some.

I found some at Canadian Tire, but that does not help those in the US. I have also found some at Wallmart. Don (from this forum) told me about Valvoline R (for racing) which does not have detergent and he has been using it in his O/D TR3 tranny for years with lots of luck. I am sure he will chime in with better words then mine on the subject.

Adrio, we here in the US should have no problem finding Valvoline Racing oil as it is carried by virtually every auto part store I know of. Yes it is excellent for use in the OD units and I have been using it for over 15 years. Getting a bit Pricy now at near $3.00/QT.---Fwiw---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Non detergent oil is getting harder to find. Especially if your looking for 40 weight. The 30 weight is more commonly found. The only place I can get 40 weight is at "Tractor Supply". They also have 30 weight. So worse case senario you go to thier website and order what you need online,...that's if you can't find it locally.

Like Adrio wrote, I'll put in my comments. For the first 80,350 miles, I always used straight 30 weight non-detergent oil in my gearbox with overdrive. I had to change the lower lay shaft 3 times. When I restored my TR3A from 1987 to 1990, I asked Ken Gillanders from Temple City in California for the latest on oil for a gearbox with overdrive. He told me to use 20W50 Valvoline R (for Racing) oil. I have driven for 15 years and more than 87,000 miles and like Keoke, I have had no problems. I change the oil every 3000 miles and clean out the strainer in the bottom of the O/D.

Most 30W non-detergent oils that I've seen are used commonly for hydraulic systems...

Hi Stinky, I think you are right, I run 60 weight and it is hard to find. My take on this is, the bulk of current oil sales is in the lighter weights for the modern car engines.Consequently, the producers supply the heavier weights only in periodic batches.I keep my eye peeled and buy a case at $41.00 including tax when ever I run across it so if the parts people are out I have on hand what is needed. Just an opinion and a method of having what you need when you need it.---Fwiw---Keoke

For SCGuy; I do not have any problem locating 30 weight Valvoline Racing at ; Pep Boys, Kragans or Auto Zone as well as independant auto stores here.
