1958 Series I 88"

Hello Land Rover Members,
I have a question. I am interested in a local 1958 Series I 88" with hardtop. The Rover has not been restored although it was repainted about 8 years ago. The paint does not look great. The Hardtop is in need of restoration. I know that I will have to replace the majority of the electrical as the vehicle was hot-wired about a year ago. It does not have the horn push and it has been stored outside for most of its recent life (8 years). I was wondering what a ballpark price would be for an unrestored, mechanically strong running Series I. I am not asking for a definite price, as I know that is impossible, I just want to know what the maximum price should be, in the eyes of other Rover owners.

Robert, that is a tough question. These have always been robust vehicles mechanically, and the oily bits are the least expensive parts to fix or replace.

Much depends on the chassis, as it can rust badly. My best recommendation is to check a copy of Hemmings to gauge the pricing of these vehicles. My best guess would be between three to four grand if there is little to no rust for a vehicle that you describe, but I am betting that there is rust in the chassis and a few other unseen issues as well. This one is probably worth less.

As a past owner for 6 years of a '73 Series 3 I can tell you they are great vehicles, Rust is the killer for the chassis, since most of the body is aluminum, actually Birmabright, The bulkheads are prone to rust as they are hollow steel & the source, availability of parts can be a little tough, especially with the series 1.

The SI chassis is a bit different than the SII. The rear crossmember is certainly different. I had gotten hold of a 57 SI with a little rust in the rear crossmember back in 87-88 but at the time I couldn't get any replacement parts for it. Now pieces are available.

OBS.. The hardtop is rare and valuable.

I sold mine for 4000 back in 88 and it was in a little rough shape but nice engine and gearbox.
