Front End Shake at Higher Speeds

Hi Chuck,

I think you may have a couple of problems. Try the easy things first.
The steering is way too loose. I'm not sure that it would cause shake though. There are adjustments on the steering box that will usually remove the play. The one on top removes worm to peg play. Tighten it down but not so tight that the steering binds. The steering shaft, part that the steering wheel is attached to, is adjusted by removing shims under the end cover. This shaft often has too much end play. I really suggest that you get a good shop manual. There are a bunch of other places that could be worn. Check all of the steering linkage joints. You may have a combination of steering problems.

The shake can be caused by tire, wheel, or brake drum imbalance. If you are sure about the wheels & tires, having the brake drums balanced sometimes solves a persistent problem. Some of them were machined way off center.

Good luck,
D

Re: Front End Shake at Higher Speeds

Thanks Dave,
Where do you get drums balanced? Same place as turning? I will check with a good cars part shop (Make, Model & Year) here in Phoenix vs Checker, etc. Maybe NAPA is OK?

Chuck,
I have gotten my brake drums turned and balanced at a Napa machine shop. It only cost $10 per drum. Well worth the money.

Re: Front End Shake at Higher Speeds

Thanks Dave,
I adjusted the steering as you and Keoke advised. It is much better now but maybe a little tight which I will adjust next weekend . I took tires/wheels back for a balancing check and the drums in to be turned, The drums were very good with little to take off. One of the wheels needed balancing (they said it was enough off to cause vibration). I guess I should have checked that first. I took my Healey for a test today on the freeway and it didn't shudder. I estimate I was going about 60+ but since my speedometer isn't correct (next post) I can only guess. Thanks again for all your advice.
Cheers,
Chuck
