TR2/3/3A Transmission dip stick

Folks,
I am considering drilling out the transmission top cover on my TR3A where the dip stick was for the TR2s and early TR3s to regain the ease of checking, and adding, transmission fluid. Everything in the casting is there, it just needs drilled out to the correct diameter and acquiring a dip stick. Plus cutting a hole in the transmission cover.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Ron

I'm thinking of doing something similar to Ron only I was lucky enough to come across a TR2 gearbox top cover. Only thing is I have a TR6 box in the car.....would the top cover fit without any issues?

IMHO...more work installing it than you would ever save checking it. I never check a box fluid level unless I know it leaks. And, if I know it leaks...I fix it. Catch 22!

When I rebuilt my gearbox and added OD I added a dipstick, nice to have. Not sure it would be worth the effort unless it's already apart.

Only the top cover would need removed from the transmission. But I do have the transmssion and overdrive out of the car as I am rebuilding both of them.

New dip sticks are not available. I found two on ebay, one with the seal and one without. Naturally, the seal is no longer available as well. Any suggestions on where one might find a transmission dip stick?

Karl, I am not sure if the TR2 and TR6 use the same cover. You could check the Moss part numbers for the gaskets and if they are the same, perhaps the covers are the same.

One of my TRs has the dipstick and the other does not. With a lift I actually find it easier to check the level using the fill hole on the non-dipstick box.

I remembered I have a Austin-Healey used transmission I bought for parts, and it has its original dip stick. It has some common parts with the TR3 transmission

Does anyone know the length of the TR2 dipstick?

Thanks.
Ron

The "seal" for the TR3A dip-stick is just a piece of felt about 1/16" thick glued all around the part were it seals with the gearbox hole. My 1958 TR3A came new with the dip stick and the felt is still working just fine after 58 years and 194,000 miles.

I'm glad I saw this post. I was beginning to thing I had lost it. I have several spare transmissions, none of which have a dip stick; however, I thought I remembered a dip stick on my new TR3A in 1960. There was also a hole in the transmission cover that allowed access to the dip stick to check transmission fluid. Don't remember ever using it, but it was there.
