Throttle Linkage

I'm having an issue with my throttle linkage. It feels like it's binding. I replaced the throttle cable thinking that was my issue but wasnt. Is there a way the carbs should be tightened down? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Chris

Did you check the throttle return springs? There should be three of them, IIRC. Sometimes they wear out or snap. I had only two on my '69 at one point and one of them snapped while driving. The remaining spring was not sufficient to get the throttle to come back, so the car started running away from me. Fortunately, I realized I had a stuck throttle and was able to kick the clutch and kill the motor before I hit anything.

The other thing you can do is disconnect the springs from the linkage and see if the linkage itself is binding anywhere. It could be something in the linkage is bent or might just need lubrication.

Yes, all 3 springs are present. Should I use a dry graphite for lubricant?

You can remove the cable at the throttle bell crank end pretty easily. Make up a little funnel of heavy card stock and tape around the cable sheath and pour a little oil in while you hold it vertically. Cable lubed!

+1 - When I pulled my gas pedal, the hinge was very, very stiff. I was actually quite amazed that the pedal was able to snap back as stiff as the hinges were.

How tight should the throttle cable be?

I've forgotten the specs, but there should be a small gap between the throttle linkage stop and the heat shield. When installing the carbs make sure that neither of the linkages binds where it fits into the 'socket' of each carb. I've never had to lubricate any of the carb parts when properly aligned and they should all move smoothly.
