BJ7 Throttle Linkage Problem - Access?

Have a problem with my BJ7 Throttle Linkage. I know because car starts & runs fine but when I push on the 'go' pedal nothing happens at carbs. Makes it not a lot of fun to drive....
Engine accels fine w/bonnet open, using carb levers. So my question is: how to access linkage mechanism where it attaches to lower firewall above transmission to sort out what has failed or come loose. Arms arent long enough for me from below and dont want to remove intake/exhaust manifolds for from front.
Is area accessible from inside?

Hi Bock, That one can be a bugger, When you move the linkage under the bonnet make sure all the linkages you see beginning at the side of the foot well move and are in place. If they do then I think the fulcrum attached to the cross shaft has loosened, it is bolted in place. Should this be case you got the Bugger. The cross shaft will require a PITA removal and the fulcrum welded on to avert this problem in the future.-Good luck--Keoke.

If the grommet at the firewall, or the rinky-dink nylastic bush mounted on the manifold have failed, you'll get next to no action at the carbs then too.

With any luck, it'll be one or both of those, as you can at least see them.

If not, well then, sorry about your luck!

They say you can get to that area by pulling the gear box tunnel cover but that it's still a pain. I've also heard that you can put the car on a lift and use long extensions to loosen the bolts. I don't know for sure because I rebuilt that when the motor was out. There is a very good tech article on the throttle linkage located here:

Thanks-- great article(s)! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Also, was hoping someone would tell me it may be possible. Will give the tunnel a "bloody go".

Yes it is possible to remove the crosshaft if necessary. The right (passenger) side isn't too bad, there are 2 7/16" bolts holding it on. Sometimes these are replaced by phillips head screws. The Left side isn't so easy. I have done it by raising the car and using multiple extensions etc. It also can be done by removing the tunnel. But that's only half the problem. You then have to replace the bloody thing. Again the right side isn't too bad. The left side presents a problem. I ended up cutting a 1" hole in order to access the bolts to tighten. The hole then can be plugged and is not visible from the inside or outside. As mentioned I highly recomend you weld the brackets on the shaft. But before you do any of the above check first the gas pedal shaft where it extends into the firewall. There is a 1/2" clamp bolt there that may be loose.

OK -- thanks for all the help. I think I understand the task & parts involved much better now. Could make the task easier.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif
