Stupid tire/wheel question.

I have Kumho P165/80 15" tires mounted on the original wheels of my TR3A. As my car is later than TS13046, I assume I've got 15/4.5" wheels.

If I were to find a decent 15/4" (not 4.5") TR3 wheel to replace my badly-bent right rear wheel, would my Kumho tire fit it?

I don't know how to correlate wheel width and tire width.

Thanks.
Tom

Yes your tire will fit a 4" wide rim. But all the rim widths on the ground should match.---Fwiw--Keoke

Thanks. So I shouldn't drive three 4.5" rims and one 4" rim?

Man it's a nightmare having one bent wheel ... and a very challenged budget.

P.S. Ask Virginia @ Sports & Classics if she does not have a good 4.5" Cheep!

I agree, but it isn't as bad as all that, IMO. I've driven over 100 miles with one 4" rim and 3 5.5" rims, and the car actually handled reasonably well. And if you match tires, it should be better yet.

I was just mad enough that I didn't really care if the "temporary use" tire I used for a spare in my TR3A bought the farm from being driven 75 mph in hot weather ... but it didn't.

Best way is to consult the tire maker. The Kumho specs (along with most other tires they sell) are posted on the Tire Rack web site

Actually you could probably make a trade for that 4" wheel since they are pretty hard to find and guys with early cars might want one.

It may be time for that set of chrome wires you always wanted.

Ah - but have you discovered what you have to do to change over? Cutting the studs, adding spline adapters for $200, buying new wheels for $1200 ... and then I can't use my original enameled hubcaps. And I just bought new Kumho 165/80s.

Nice idea tho'

Hi There Nutmeg;

I did`nt really have the answer for you relative to using your current tires on 4 or 4.5 rims but I guess you could?

I agree with the majority; Run all the same widths! If not, your probably looking for trouble down the pike:

I`m not certain what size mine are but today just may be your lucky day! I`m going to be off to the Wheel Gurus here shortly with my rims & tires:

Look for PM later in the day;

Wish us both luck here but I feel pretty confident this is what your looking for!!!!!

I converted my TR3 over to wire wheels two years ago. Went with some 72 spoke chrome tubeless. Worth every penny!

I would not think that running 4.5 inch wide rims and on 4 inch wide rim would affect driveability, tire mounting yes but you do have a width range a tire will fit, I know you dont want to run a 15 inch rim and a 14 inch rim especially on the rear, you have the wheels turing at different speeds and the differential carrier gears will suffer

Short-term (i.e. "emergency"), I don't think an "open" differential will suffer much at all from different sizes (diameters) of wheels/tires. A "limited-slip" might be another story. As for rim width, I wouldn't go for months with different width wheels, but a half-inch difference shouldn't be a problem...unless the tire on that narrower rim is substantially different in construction or tread design. If it's the same tire as the others on the car, I doubt it would be noticeable at all 99.44% of the time.

Resurrecting this thread due to the TRF 25% weekend discount sale.

I've got four new Kumho 758 165/80-15 tires on my original (bent and wobbly) TR3A steel wheels.

Will there be any problem in using those Kumho tires on new Panasport 15x5.5 wheels?

At $236 each, plus $50 total shipping, I'm getting itchy.

Hey Tom;

I was just driving thru /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif and noticed this post:

My rims and tires are on ebay right now! Check out item # 160162972685:

Not the best pic in the world but it`ll give you a Good Idea of what my rims & tires look like: Bring the TR down to PA & we`ll mount the rims on your car and see how "TRUE" they are: What do you think?

"HAPPY BIDDING TOM"; You won`t be dis-appointed!
