Stupid project idea...

A turboed, fuel injected (TBI), 5-speed 948...

I'll probably never do this, it's just a kinda thought experiment.

The goal of said experiment would be an engine that gets excellent gas mileage (high 30s low 40s) but is able to quickly accelerate to highway speeds (70-80mph) and cruise at such speeds for extended periods.

What do you guys think? Are these goals achievable?

Trying to find a use for all the 948's that people are throwing away?

I see no problem with this. Which turbo would spool up quickly from that small of an engine? The Junk Yard Turbo forums would be a good place to look. I have a never used Megasquirt controller for a previously abandoned EFI project that I would like to use in the same sort of application.

For small turbos, look into the new VW(a small Garrett unit),
or "Arctic Cat" snowmobile. There are very few turbos made for the under 1L engine. As I recall the T25 from Garrett is one choice.
I'm considering doing this very same thing with the 948 under the workbench and putting it in the A35 for exactly the same reasons Morris stated.

After seeing your project, Glen, I am considering the same on my 1275 when the time comes. Seems to give the best of everything - power & economy. Plus, from my FWD 3800 days, the turbo puts out less torque at low RPM, which means off the line (unless you dump the clutch), which means it's a little easier on drivetrain components (I am thinking axles).

In my eyes, the ROI is worth it versus going N/A. My car won't be stock in a lot of ways anyhow.

I'd be surprised if a 948 could stand that much power reliably. My understanding is that the crank is not as robust as the later 1275 blocks.

I'm keeping my original 948 around, though. Gas prices get high enough, it might be rebuilt and reused.

What about the Opcon supercharger?
nice little package and suited to less than liter app.
Quick to hiway speeds should notbe a problem.
