Shifting Issue: Clutch Question

Gentlemen:

I recently got my 1960 BE on the road after nearly nine months on the shelf. But now I have a problem:

- I'm having problems getting the car to shift gears. In fact, it seems that the clutch performance has deteriorated in the last few times it has been driven. Now it is nearly impossible to get the car to shift into 2nd gear. When I bring the car to a halt and have the clutch pedal depressed the car stalls (indicating that the clutch is not disengaging). I must add the the master cylinider is holding fluid.

- Also: The car pops out of fourth gear. This was a problem that I bought with the car, but I thought that once I installed new engine and trans mounts that this problem would go away, but it hasn't.

My son thinks the master cylinder should be rebuilt in order to fix the shifting problem. Is he right?

Regarding the popping out of fourth gear: Is this a major rebuild deal? If yes, is it better to buy a replacement tranny or get the one I have rebuilt?

Let me know,
Mike Pennell

I would look at the slave push rod for travel, I believe that it should be over an inch probably one and a half to two (others here know better).

A clutch bleed on a rebuild takes alot of time and patience, when you think you have got it, it is usually time to go back back and bleed it some more.

The fourth gear doesn't sound good, it maybe a worn, poorly shimmed plunger, incorrect plunger or maybe worse.

A mount will most likely not cause it to pop. Rebuilding the trans depends upon your experience, patience and IMHO fortitude. Others can help you more with this.

Are you still running a smoothie or do you have rib eye?

hehehe Drew, pizza here tonight and yes, I haven't eaten yet. Just some libation after a long week and collecting some loaned tools from neighbors before they disappear. I Ugggh them Porsche guys never return a thing, probably to busy spending their money on parts hehehe.

Mike please let us know what you find, there are so many people here who know more then me and I am sure that they will be able to help you through this. The first and cheapest step is to check the bleed. They are usually a pita to do and require a second go round. It is easy to check the pushrod for movement with a flashlight and this would be the best route to take at first IMHO.

Pat:

Thanks for the tips. We'll try the bleeding tomorrow. I went to a car show today and met a few BE owners. they also recommended bleeding first, then followed by a rebuild if the problem persists.

BTW: The car does have a ribbed case transmission in it.
