Poor Shifting 2nd gear

Well actually it pretty much refuses to go into 2nd.

Got the 64 B running well enough to go up and down the street and the clutch works fine but going into 2nd no amount of double clutching will get it to go into 2nd gear smoothly.

Does this mean the synchro is just gone?

What is my best option now?

Feeling a little sick if this gearbox has to come out and apart.

Jay - Unfortunately, it does sound like a bad syncro on your second gear. You can get the shift into second to go smoother if you just pause a bit between first and second. There is no need to double clutch, you are just pausing a bit to let the first motion shaft to slow down until the input is matched to the output speed in second gear.

A sintered iron "update" balk ring was the early answer to this problem, but as Dave says; the box needs to come out to replace it.

And you were supposed to change the gear cluster at the same time to match the newer style synchro ring, although I don't honestly know what happens if you just stick the synchro in.

Well that is just great.

There is a box out of a 63 I can have for $100 bucks.

Would it be a good idea to just buy that one and pull it apart first to soo if it needs anything and then if not ,, go ahead and install it or will they all need to have 2nd gear synchro replaced?

Where do you buy gearbox parts?

Parts from Tony, "The Autoist" here on BCF. A spare gearbox, rebuilt and sitting (my preference) alongside the couch inna living room is a "good thing".

Bill's right about the gear cluster too. And since it's such a PITA to get the box out/in, the "may-as-wells" are: new layshaft and bearings, first motion bearings, input/output bearings and seals... There's a "kit" for the job, IIRC.
