Rear Brake Question

Are the two "steady posts", the threaded pins that are screwed into the brake backing plate, intended to make contact with the brake shoe? What purpose do the little felt tips on the ends of the steady posts serve?

Those little felt pads are called steady bushes they should align the surface of the shoe to coincide with the drum and dampen clatter. A little antisieze compound or white grease on them wiil improve their function and they should be adjusted to just touch the webb of the shoe.--Fwiw---Keoke
