Rear Axle Pinion Seal

To any of you who have replaced their TR3 Rear Axle Pinion Seal.

When I pulled off my pinion sleeve it was slightly grooved. In your experience should the new seal stop the leaks or did you have to put on a speedy sleeve?

Curt-

I have yet to do this, but all advice I have seen on this says that if it is grooved, use a speedy sleeve. It also is common to fit one for the front timing cover seal.

Agree. Speedi-sleeve and it's an easy fix. Comes with a "tool" to push it on and then just pull off the tab around the outside of the sleeve.

So the same sleeve fits the front timing cover seal? That's the only one I can find on the Moss website.

I'm also rebuilding my rear diff, and just to be safe, want to install one, since my previous rear pinion seal leaked like the Exxon Valdez.

No, I don't think its the same. Chicago Rawhide (now SKF) number for the front cover is 99174 (diameter 1.747-1.753), for the rear pinion its 99149 (diameter 1.497-1.503).

Don't quote me on the numbers as this was the result of a quick web search. For some reason Moss doesn't list the rear diff anymore.

My rule of thumb is that if you can polish away all signs of the groove with crocus cloth, then it's probably OK. If there is enough left to feel with a fingernail, definitely replace or install a sleeve. In between those two is a judgement call ... for a rear axle, I'd probably just install a new seal and hope for the best.

I agree, not the same sleeve. Dunno about Moss numbers, I buy my sleeves at NAPA.

Heh... 520-505 is the engine Speedi Sleve, and 520-500 is the rear diff sleeve.

I just called Moss and had them change my order.

Oddly, you cannot "find" it via their website. I had to enter the part number directly via the "bulk order" form in order to get the link to it.

Nothing against Moss, I use them all the time. But I usually place my Moss order (especially big $ ones) through lbcarco.com, a volume dealer. He gives a substantial discount (~15%) on all items, all the time. Click search on the page, then enter parts numbers, TRF parts too.

Part number Description Retail price Our Price US$
520-500 SPEEDI-SLEEVE, DIFF PINION - TR2-6, MIDGET, MGA, BANJO MGB 37.95 32.26
520-505 SPEEDI-SLEEVE, TIMING COVER - TR2-4A TIMING COVER 39.65 33.71

Not sure if you knew this already or not but there are several dealers that give these discounts. Just trying to save you a few bucks, Moss et al. still get their share too.
