Question, dumb one for the day

I had to take 1/32 off of the rear drums to get the brake shoes to fit, they seem ok now but are on the bottom adjustment. That's fine I think.

Now the front ones are adjusted all the way out and I do not think that is enough even.

Could these shoes be bad? How could I tell? Or should I just order some new ones from a different source.

Back too big front too small and they are not the same steel part of the shoe as the front has two cylinders and the rear one.

sorry jack ... can't offer any advice here ... but it certainly doesn't sound right at all.

There should be a dimension somewhere for the maximum diameter that the brake drums can be machined. I certainly wouldn't exceed that number. You don't mention if these were new drums you had machined or one's previously installed. If you'd previously used them, then I'd suspect the new shoes.

New drums all around. Crazy isn't it. And the drums meet spec.

What happens if you put the drums from the back on the front?

I think that all four are the same. I am just curious?

The bugeye stock shoes are different front and rear.

The POST Bugeye rear shoes are yet again different. Dont' ask me what the diferences are tho.

The correct shoes SHOULD fit with a standard size drum. Those drums can tolerate maybe .050" removed but they get pretty thin at that point. But U should NOT have to cut the drum IF the shoes are correct.

$$ to bananas you have the wrong shoes...maybe. OR ...(and this is a longshot) the pads you have are probably relined...just possibly the reliner used lining that is too thick.

In a perfect world you should be able back off the adjusters so everything is quite free.

BTW....all the B.E. and later drums are the same part number.

My thought also Jack, and it is also possible that you were sold either the wrong drums or shoes for the year of the vehicle. I do not recall the exact figures, but I do know there are differences between early and late model brakes!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Jack, I had the identical problem a couple of years ago. Seems the lining on one set of shoes was too thin, and all the adjustment I had wouldn't compensate for it. This was with new cylinders and adjusters. I sourced new shoes from somewhere else, and it took care of the problem. But, I can't remember where I finally got the good shoes from!
