That looks to be correct. The reach is about 1".

My 1275 in BE with down flow rad and oilcooler runs 190 with air temp above 80 degrees. I think I have a 165 degree thermostat.
One of the keys to keeping the temp stable is to make sure all the air goes through the radiator and not around it. Some extra shrouding always helps to make sure.
BTW, I have a complete crossflow setup sitting around if anyone is interested. It was working fine in my FP car before I changed to a Scirocco radiator which worked even better.

The Scrirocco radiator fit pretty easily in a non BE. You do need the cross flow piping as the inlet/outlet are the same as on the crossflow setup on the passenger side. You need to figure out hoses as the inlet outlet are larger than the stock rad.
It is directly mounted on the front cross frame on rubber mounts.
I am attaching the only pic I have of that area. Everything is rather crammed due the front end reinforcing that is tied back to the cage and this I not a concours car

Thanks Joe. Looks a bit crowded but doable. Only problem I would see is getting air flow through the sides of the radiator. It looks as if all that sheet metal behind the grill has likely been removed.

As the engine would come out 3-4 times a season everything infront except the required sheet metal was removed or removable. the top cross piece is only screwed I as opposed to being welded, it actually holds the Rad in place. The radiator shrouding was remade to fit the Scirocco rad and was attached to the cross piece.
Engine out in less than an hour. In just slightly longer. The Scirocco rad was less than $100 and kept the engine,112HP at the wheels@7500 at about 190 degrees in August.
This is overkill for street car engine.
As I said, I run my street 1275 at the same temp with a 50 YO down flow rad.

The carbs are 1 1/2". I cannot remember the needles that were in them. I sold the spec book with the car. It was Comptune cam, crank fire MSD, 3 into 1 header and 13.5:1 compression. Nothing below 4K. 8300 before bus stop at WG.
The manifold needs to be cut and narrowed to use the 1 1/2 inch carbs.
There are a lot of discussions regarding using the 1.5 inch carbs as some people claim they are too big for flow. However, I never had a problem with them but they are too big for anything less than a full race motor.
I never tried the bridgeless setup although I have a set. Setting them up is very tricky.
