I have some over spray on some rubber gaskets. What can I use to clean this off without damaging the rubber? I think lacquer thinner would be too strong. Mac

Hi,

I have used laquer thinner in the past with good results. However it is strong and can dammage certian materials. Mineral spirits can also do a number on certain plastics and vinyl.

Place a small amount on a rag and wipe with care in a non conspicuos area if possable paying attention to what may be happening to the surface you are cleaning. Remember to not leave the thinner on the surface any longer then you need to. Have another clean rag handy and use masking tape if you need to avoid other surfaces in the area.

Have a grat day!

I don't like thinner because it removes the natural "gloss" from rubber, leaving it sort of 'flat' and 'cloudy'. Same with pure alcohol. I remember seeing a safe product just for overspray removal sold by The Eastwood Co. in their catalog, but I never bought it at the time! Try to polish it off with some polish cream, because overspray is such a light coat, it can literally be polished off. Same idea as when we polish our cars and the rag turns the same color as the car's paint, because you are actually removing paint when you polish.

I know this sounds a bit funny, but I have had an
excellant result with just such problem with product
called Island Girl.

Click on the web site below and read on the product.
Island Girl is principally sold to clean boat parts
and products such as gel coats; but it is also used on
rubber and plastic types, etc.

What I found, to my delight, was that once applied, if left
on too long, it will remove things such as glue or paint.

Or paint???

Yes, it will, and all the while cleaning and lubricating the rubber from whince the paint is removed, as well as
adding UV protection to the rubber. Your rubber looks great -- similar to Armoral. Now that's cool.

Click and read on product(s), i.e., Island Girl Pink; White
or whatever. One or the other is more aggressive for paint removal, but I just can't remember which. Seems I've used each with pretty good result, as long as it is just overspray.
Go here: https://www.islandgirlproducts.com/

Best of luck and wished I would have seen this sooner.

Dennis.

So I'm wondering, there must be a catch to this stuff, if it works so well. From the website picture you don't need to wear gloves or a mask, only a grass skirt.............. Oh, I get it, we have to go to Hawaii to use it. That must be heck. I'm on my way.
