You're running a little rich on startup, that's normal, which is like having a kerosene lamp turned up too high and blackens the chimney. Now condensation forms in the pipe, and the black is washed off the inside of the pipe and is blown out the back. If you clean it off frequently, it means nothing. But it'll mess up the paint if you don't clean it off often enough. The condensation is why the exhaust system on a car that is not run enough to get hot rots from the inside.

One of our club members was having some trouble with his XKE. It was idling and we were checking things out and I put a hand behind his exhaust for a second thinking I would then give it a sniff test for coolant or unburned fuel.

He chose that exact moment to gun the engine.

Took an amazing amount of scrubbing to get that large black circle off of my palm.

Yeah, its not a good idea to walk close behind the car in your tan pants while it's idling, particularly when the engine has not warmed up yet. Ask me how I know this!

The dirty little secret that has come to the fore here is that it has not been legal for some years to sell mufflers with weep holes installed. So now we must put in our own weep holes....I suggest 1/8in at the lowest point of each muffler/resonator that you have. This also improves the life of the critters since moisture in the exhaust becomes very acidic very quickly(nitric)Modern cars with cats do the same thing but the water is cleaner and clears up quicker....

OTOH, I can't remember the last time I had one rust out on the bottom, where the moisture would be. I did change the muffler on the TR3A after some 15 years and who knows how many miles; but it was the end plate that rusted/broke. The outer wrapper was still fine, except where it had drug a bit (probably during an unscheduled off-road expedition).

Of course the fiberglass was long gone, it should have been replaced much sooner; but not because of rust.
