Copper spray and head gasket instructions???

Well I've got my head off and I am getting ready to put her back together. Lemme tell you, when I blow a head gasket, I really blow it. Both side of the gasket where completely covered with oil and water. The head popped right off. Normally I have to turn the car over a couple of times to get the gasket to separate, but not this time.

Anyway, on to my question: Hap says use copper seal on the gasket this go round. Hap's word is law as far as I am concerned. I bought a can of CF Copper Spray. Is this the right stuff? Can anyone give em a few tips on application?

The copper coat is good, and I have used metallic silver spray paint for years with good results as well. I have found that aluminum heads keep a head gasket on better than cast iron. I run 115 oct. unleaded fuel and 13.8 compression in the race car and have never lost a gasket. It is fuel if everyone can't buy it or use it and gasoline if everybody can and does.

The Permatex product is called "Hi-Tack" Morris. But if that stuff is stated for head gaskets it should be fine. Spray a thin coat on both sides, let it hang for a bit, then slap that puppy together and torque! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Great advice. Slap it on tacky and not dry. And you might want to consider a retorque in a few hundred miles, too. Sort of settle things down a bit. And don't forget to re-adjust the valves as well.

I've also use the aluminum piant deal as well, also used the Hi Tack, Hi Tack does better job on the composite head gaskets, on some of them the copper spray doesn't do as well, doesn't seem to want to stick to the gasket as well. FWIW, I coat every head gasket regardless if it says to put them on dry or not, always have.

I highly recommend the MLS type gaskets. It certainly is the very best head gasket I've found, by far. There are a number of suppliers, I think this place may have them for your engine series.

However, block & head surfaces must be very level & finished to a smoother surface than conventional gaskets. Surfaces very clean & NO sealer.
